3 Strategies to Reclaim Your Breaks: Setting Boundaries as Educators

Winter break is coming up! It is essential to remind yourself to rest and recharge. Check your teaching contract if your district does not seem to support that. You are not a doctor on a night rotation call. You teach our youth and deserve rest. During your time off:

  1. Leave an Out of Office Reply

You have work hours during the day, but during the holidays, administration, coworkers, and parents may need a reminder.

2. Power off your work

If you bring anything with you, keep it in your drop-off zone or office in your home and pick it up on your way back to school. Suppose you must dedicate time, maybe a half day at most. Do not turn off that Out of Office reply, and don’t post grades until school begins again.

3. Limit the school talk (mainly negative)

If someone asks you how everything is going at a gathering, answer, tell a funny story, and switch the subject. You are more than a teacher. You have family, friends, and hobbies. Invest in those as well during your break.

Happy Winter Break :)

You are doing a fabulous job educating our youth.
